Generally, Getting around London

TFL – Transport for London
http://www.tfl.gov.uk will tell you everything you need to know about travel around London. The postcode of the hotel is E16 1AA – put that in the journey planner to find your way home.

Oystercards
An Oystercard is the cheapest way to get around London (you will be charged a premium for paper tickets).

The ticket is a pay-as-you-go card which is pre-loaded with credit. They can be used on:
•    Tube
•    Bus
•    DLR

You can buy them at any station or visit https://oyster.tfl.gov.uk (UK) or  http://visitorshop.tfl.gov.uk/  (overseas)

Tube
The easiest way to get around. Map: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/standard-tube-map.pdf

The nearest station to the hotel is Canning Town on the Jubilee Line

**The last tubes are usually around midnight.**
Buses
Every bus stop has a map of the local area, with a diagram showing all the routes served. You can use your Oyster on buses. These are the buses from ExCel: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/gettingaround/maps/buses/pdf/exceldocklands-10307.pdf

There are night buses from Central London which run overnight. The N551 runs from Trafalgar Square to ExCel: http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/user/AHF/TLJJP12P1__0000080a.pdf

DLR (Docklands Light Railway)
This is a light railway which connects the Docklands area. The trains are remote controlled and grown men will always fight to sit at the front and pretend they’re the driver. You will do it, don’t pretend you won’t, you’re not too old.

Taxis
A London Black Cab taxi is an excellent photo opportunity – but will cost a fortune and are best avoided if you can. From Central London to the Novotel, expect a fare of £40-£50. They can also be quite scarce after 11pm.

Black cabs can be hailed in the street or at designated ranks situated in prominent places, including many mainline rail, Tube and bus stations. They can also be booked by telephone. If the yellow TAXI sign at the front is illuminated, the cab is available for hire. Black cabs are legally obliged to take on any job for journeys up to 12 miles. Many black cabs accept payment by credit or debit card but check with the driver before the trip starts. You can tip taxi drivers as much as you like, but most people round up to the nearest pound.

Unbooked minicabs are illegal. You may be approached by minicab drivers seeking passengers or offering a service; avoid this as these are unsafe, unlicensed, uninsured and illegal.

River
This is a really lovely way to travel to and from Central London. Catch the Jubilee Line to North Greenwich and pick up the boat from there http://www.tfl.gov.uk/gettingaround/piers/21314.aspx

Travel Maps

Given the conference is over a weekend, here’s an interactive one showing engineering (so you can see that your tube line/station will in fact be shut) – http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/im/rd-t.html

And here is one that is slightly better at putting the stations in relation to each other – and importantly, where its easier to walk: http://london-tubemap.com/index.php
